Boston Area Music Events

This page contains all the events at which Dr. Snark often performs, plus some other Boston area music events.

Boston Area Song Swap

Song Swap is an event I founded to complement other events. It's intended as a low-pressure chance to perform, in any genre of music. Everyone gets a chance to perform if they wish (usually we rotate around a circle), although nonperforming audience members are also quite welcome.

Song Swap is usually held in North Cambridge, MA, in Cornerstone Housing near the Alewife T stop. Song Swap is held monthly, usually on the first full weekend of each month, alternating Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Note: Song Swap is currently on hiatus schedule and directions

M.A.S.S.F.I.L.C.

MassFilc is an organization devoted to filk music, although its members are tolerant of other genres of acoustic performance. Filk is a subset of folk music that is practiced in, by, and for the Science Fiction and Fantasy fan community. For more information, see here or here, or else just attend a meeting of MassFilc. :-) MassFilc has monthly meetings (usually in various members' houses) plus occasional "housefilks."

Songsculpt

Songsculpt is a songwriters' workshop held at Art Space Maynard (63 Summer St., Maynard, MA) monthly, usually on a Sunday from 2 to 6pm. Songwriters take turns performing songs and asking for feedback, as well as discussing songwriting and performance issues in general.

The next Songscupt is:
[*] (None scheduled as of July 2003) at Art Space Maynard (63 Summer St., Maynard, MA)

Contact Tom Keeg at songsculpt@hotmail.com to be placed on the mailing list for Songsculpt.

Song Circle

Song Circle is held in Everett most Thursday evenings at 7pm. (More information forthcoming.)

Contact info forthcoming.
Note: Song Circle is currently on hiatus

Group singing events

These are all group singing events-- the goal is to involve everyone, not to "perform" solo. As it happens, they are all biweekly. Note that these are all private events, even more so than some others on the list, so please get permission from the host first and/or be introduced by a friend who already attends (such as me, if you know me already).

Psinging takes place every other Friday night (8pm-11pm) at a private residence in Arlington, for "friends of friends" only (i.e., when you come for the first time, come with a friend who already attends). Among the group singing events, Psinging is noteworthy for being very democratic and organized-- just tell the "queuekeeper" what song you want to add to the list. We sing from "Rise Up Singing" and other sources (especially "V"), but as long as you provide 12 copies of the lyrics and are willing to teach us a new song, we'll give anything a chance. Contact Gunther Anderson at gunther@guntheranderson.com to be added to the email announcement list.

Music Night (formerly "Teal House Music Night") usually takes place every other Wednesday night, hosted by Bob Adams in "the green house" at 27 Winter St. in Davis Square, Somerville. We play and sing from "Rise Up Singing" and whatever other songbooks and sheets are around (or brought), and it sometimes turns into something of a semi-chaotic jam session compared to the other group singing events. To subscribe to the list announcements (which contain directions to Bob's), send an email to music_night-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
Note: Music Night is now more-or-less on hiatus

Cornerstone Cohousing Sing Night usually takes place every other Sunday night, at Cornerstone Housing (near Alewife station) in Cambridge. Announcements are on the Music Night mailing list (above).

Folk Song Society of Greater Boston

The FSSGB is a non-profit organization of people who are interested in folk music: its traditional origins and sources, as well as its current expression. The FSSGB is dedicated to providing opportunities for everyone to make, enjoy, and support this music. Membership in the Folk Song Society entitles you to reduced admission to FSSGB concerts, attendance to singing parties and special events, a free subscription to the Folk Letter, and regular announcements of FSSGB events.

FSSGB sponsors a monthly concert series, periodic workshops, singing parties, and the Fall Getaway Weekend, and maintains an extensive library of folk music.
